The Liminal Being
written and performed by Mai Rose
(presented by Mai Rose as a part of the Theaterwalla program)
An earlier version of this play was presented at Dreamland Arts in 2017.
Take a journey through the absurd, tragic, and beautiful life of Mai Rose. Each chapter weaves through their story with the rhythm of life and brings us closer to an understanding of what it means to be human. Pieces of the picture fall into place, bringing poverty, disability, child abuse and sexual assault into stark relief. It reminds us that tragedy and injustice doesn’t only happen to other people, it can also happen to us. Their story may be painful at times, but it is imbued with hope and promise; a testament to the human spirit in us all. This show inspires the audience to be the heroes that the world is crying out for.
About Mai Rose: Mai studied Theater and English at Drake University and has performed as an actor and singer from the Des Moines Playhouse to First Avenue. They graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Sociology and Communications. Mai spent the last few years building a career as a speaker and writer, with a focus on personal growth as a tool for social change. They are currently working on their second feature length screenplay. Learn more about Mai’s work at https://realizingthesun.com/

Hand in Hand
written and performed by Leslye Orr
First performed in 1982, Hand in Hand is a play in which audience members experience a heightened awareness of their own senses. They are seated in a spiral configuration, asked to close their eyes, and brought in touch with the world of Helen Keller, who was deaf and blind, and her teacher, Anne Sullivan, who was legally blind. A myriad of objects are passed around the spiral while actress Leslye Orr tells a riveting story inspired by the profound letters and witty lectures of the great educator and her spirited pupil. Orr, herself legally blind since birth, created Hand in Hand to share her belief in the “possibilities of disabilities.” Watch video
This workshop-performance has been presented for schools, colleges, at staff trainings for organizations such as Serve Minnesota (Americorps) and for human resources departments at places like the Walker Art Center and Carlson School of Management. In 2012, Leslye traveled to Lithuania, Latvia and Israel with Hand in Hand as a speaker and specialist for the U.S. State Department.
