Managing Culture Shock with the Improvisational Mindset
An online evening of improvisation on Zoom with Jim Robinson and Ethan Goldbach

Many of us think of “culture shock” as applying only to people going abroad for the first time. Here in the U.S., we’re gradually returning to normal — that’s culture shock! Join us as we explore ways improvisation can help us enter new worlds, either at home or abroad.

This 90-minute online workshop co-hosted by Jim Robinson and Ethan Goldbach explores how an improvisational mindset can help all of us navigate culture shock. Through a series of experiential exercises, participants will discover techniques for increasing flexibility, tolerating ambiguity, and developing resilience. Most importantly, attendees will come away with ways to bolster curiosity and find the gifts new situations can bring.

Jim Robinson (Fulbright Specialist Pakistan, 2018) brought his workshop “Improvisation and Mental Health” to USEFP, NUST, and COMSATS. He has worked with international students for over 35 years, teaching improvisation and psychology in Pakistan, Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Panama, and Australia. Currently Jim works with social workers and law enforcement officers, using improv techniques as a method for crisis intervention and motivational interviewing.

Ethan Goldbach, BA. Ethan has a Bachelor’s in History and International Studies. He volunteered, tutored, and taught for the last 8 years in the Dominican Republic, South Korea, Malaysia (Fulbright U.S. Student Program, 2015 & 2016), and Bangladesh (Asian University for Women (2019-present).

Unhooked!
An online evening of introductory improvisation on Zoom with Jim Robinson

Spring has sprung. Like a coil. A coil that circles endlessly. Can we let go of repetitive thoughts? Stories with tired plots? Demands on the future? In improv we say, “let go of your story and be in the moment!” Let’s get together and give it a go. This 90-minute online workshop will use improv techniques to help us have fun without insisting on perfection. Please join Jim Robinson and Dreamland Arts for this pay-what-you-wish Zoom event. You can stay safe AND join us at Dreamland Arts. Sounds perfect, or at least pretty good!

Jim Robinson has a dual career in improvisation and psychology. He’s an alumnus of the Brave New Workshop, the Off-Beat Comedy Club onboard the Disney Magic, and is co-founder of Table Salt Productions, a local theater company dedicated to producing original works in the Twin Cities. Jim has also taught psychology at St. Catherine University and at the University of St. Thomas. He hails from Riverside, California.
